With its surrounding two seas, the state of Baja California was primed to become one of the world’s great centers of ingredient-driven seafood cuisines. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the state’s port city, Ensenada—home to one of Mexico’s most highly regarded mariscos scenes.

From the indigenous foodways of the Kumeyaay peoples, to the influence of Japanese fishermen who came to the port city just after the turn of the century, to the decades of internal migration from seafood obsessed states like Sonora and Sinaloa in Mexico’s north, Ensenada’s mariscos mosaic is truly one-of-a-kind.

It’s a must-visit destination for seafood lovers.

Join CTH for a deep dive into Ensenada’s famed seafood scene. We’ll begin our adventure with a hearty cahuamanta stew in the home of a retired fisherman who worked on boats in Ensenada’s harbor for decades. After, we’ll visit five distinct Ensenada carretas, as the city’s seafood stands are known locally, for a sumptuously delicious and diverse overview of the mariscos bounty that defines this port city.

A valid passport is required.

SMALL GROUP TRAVEL

A blogger once described CTH’s outings this way: 'It felt like very cool friends were showing us around their town.' That's what CTH is all about.

THE RENDEZVOUS POINT

We meet in San Diego, near the Mexico border. We walk into Tijuana as a group, pass through Mexican customs, then meet our private transportation on the other side.

EAT. EAT. REPEAT.

Once aboard, we embark on a 1.5-hour scenic drive to Ensenada. Over the course of the day, we will visit 8 of our favorite places in Ensenada. We’ll explore the best of the city’s famed street food and the region’s iconic dishes that make Ensenada + Baja California one of Mexico’s best seafood cuisines. We’ll also visit a family-run ahumadora, or smokehouse, that’s been smoking fish in Baja California’s port city for more than six decades.

ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END

With full bellies, we’ll head back to the border, where our transportation will drop us off at the pedestrian crossing on the Tijuana side. We’ll cross through the US Customs on foot. The exit of the facility is right where we started, at the San Ysidro Trolley Station. Border waits can be unpredictable.
